Went to … where?

A cool new crowd-sourcing project from my alma mater, the University of Iowa*: take one of the Civil War diaries the library has scanned and posted online and start transcribing. Here’s what Lot Abraham was up to on New Year’s Day 1864:

January 1, 1864. Clear Creek, Near Vicksburg, Mississippi. Weather clear and cold. In camp all day busy writing. No mail or news of any kind-all quiet- I took a ride in the evening and went to- But back at 11.

By the way, when it comes to biblical names, you can’t get any better than Lot Abraham—although it does seem a bit like his parents were hedging their bets. I can relate, though. I am named for both a criminal and a priest.
