Confederate colonel William R. J. Pegram (whose death is chronicled here) looked an awful lot like Dustin Hoffman, right?
An archivist at the Virginia Historical Society, Colin Woodward, thought so and even mailed the actor a copy of the above portrait. Hoffman replied:
I’ve been out of the country, just got back into the office and there waiting on my desk was my soul mate from the Civil War.
